Though certainly not pleasing on the eye, this stile does just about serve its function – though the current condition of the wood used suggests it may not do for much longer! The single step used may incorporate a rather unorthodox design, but its height and width are admittedly adequate enough to make sure that navigation is just about okay – though the decision to put the two bars on one side means that they do leave little room available on the other side of the stile. I would argue that this is quite a severe design flaw, but to even attribute the word ‘design’ to this stile feels highly inappropriate. The wood used for the bars looks like it is about to disintegrate, so without some much-needed TLC this stile is not likely to survive many more winters.
